In 2009 I left the truss industry and moved back to Texas from Ohio and started working in the Turn-Key Framing Industry. With my extensive background with the Structural Building Components Association, I quickly saw the disconnect between the component manufacturers and the framers and contacted the Director of SBCA and shared my thoughts on how we could solve this situation.
In an email in 2010 to the director of SBCA I gave him an idea of what I thought could be very valuable to the framers in the US. The basic thought was to have a framing arm inside SBCA and have an industry-wide ‘best practices’ for framing that would work hand in hand with the component industry. This could include an industry safety plan, an industry QC plan, an SBCA certified framer program similar to SCORE, contract review training and best practice. Basically, looking at all the programs that had been developed in SBCA and modifying them to apply to framers.
By 2013, these ideas became the launching pad for the official start of the NFC. George Hull, Kenneth Shifflett and Scott Stevens were a few of the 1st framers that embraced these ideas and wanted to get involved. Bo Powers, Jerry Vulgaris, Dwight, and Joe Hikel were a few of the 1st component manufacturers to embrace this as well and jumped in with both feet to help establish the NFC.
My passion for the NFC has not changed and I continue to serve on the steering committee. The framer sets all our products and without them the industry cannot innovate and grow. The NFC has grown into a thriving organization with so many framing companies and leaders that have taken up the torch and taken it to levels that I could have never imagined in 2010.
The future of the NFC is in great hands, and I look forward to seeing it’s continual growth and success.
